2020 spring fling postponed

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM VARIAN ARABIANS

We have been monitoring the escalating situation of COVID-19 (coronavirus) carefully over the last two weeks. The health and safety of our Varian Arabians guests, clients and staff are of our utmost concern.

And while the Varian Spring Fling is not scheduled till the end of April, the unpredictability of travel and safety continues to be in question, It is for this reason that we are postponing the Spring Fling until late Summer 2020. (Appropriately, we will be changing the name from the Spring Fling to the Summer Jubilee.

If you would like to cancel your ticket altogether for a refund, please email Angela and she will accommodate you.

Otherwise, we sincerely hope that you keep your ticket for now in hopes of joining us later this Summer. We'll announce dates as the impact of the virus shows a safe window of opportunity.

The support of the V Community continues to amaze all of us who work here and run Varian Arabians. Thank you, endlessly, for your support and encouragement.

Be well and stay safe.

The 2020 Varian Arabians Spring Fling… The Much-Loved Event Returns
By Evie Tubbs Sweeney

Since the passing of its founding icon, Sheila Varian, over three years ago, Varian Arabians has demonstrated its deep rooted ability to carve a new chapter for the historic farm, largely due to its foundational principles that are esteemed as much now as ever before. In this sense, Varian Arabians is truly timeless. And so are its principles… aptly dubbed “The Varian Way.”

It represents a lifestyle, an homage to those before us, a set of horsemanship skills that are as much as about us as they are about the horses we ride. Like Tom Dorrance – the wise equine revolutionary who tutored his young pupil, Sheila Varian, in the quiet language of horses – Sheila’s principles are a way of life as well. It combines a love for the land, a loyalty to tradition steeped in Vaquero heritage, a soft approach to horsemanship, and a hands-on methodology that challenges our own humanity as much as our horses.

One of its most beloved annual events, the Varian Arabians Spring Fling held every April, is being reinaugurated, much to the delight of horse enthusiasts around the world. The weekend is an all-encompassing celebration of “The Varian Way,” offering guests an inspiring weekend filled with learning, entertainment, wonderful food and wine, and camaraderie among its attendees, backdropped against the tranquil and inspiring farm whose walls have seen history made decade after decade, beginning in the 1960s.

Guests will enjoy all that the beautiful farm has to offer, from its flower-laden, exquisite grounds to the rich and abundant history hinting at every bend. No better example is the famous Varian Arabians History Wall. This favorite experience turns the inside wall of the illustrious show barn into a 225-foot immersive walk through history, as visitors journey through photos, memorabilia and other artifacts alongside Sheila, general manager Angela Alvarez, and all its famous equine residences since the inception of the farm.

2020 spring fling

One of the newest additions to the farm experiences offered is the Sheila Varian Museum, a labor of love by general manager Angela Alvarez that opened in August 2016. The Museum transforms Sheila’s office areas and personal living room peeking into the intricacies of the legendary cowgirl – both as a human being and as legendary horse woman.

Education is always a key element to the Varian Arabian weekend events. The inaugural Varian Way Weekend will feature demonstrations by each of the three renowned trainers at Varian Arabians – Jaime Hernandez, Mike Perez and its newest trainer, Andres Castano. All three share the same quiet hands and guiding principles of horsemanship that Sheila did.

NOTE: * Due to a rescheduled orthopedic appointment, Jaime Hernandez will not be a clinician this year.

Guests will also enjoy presentations of the Varian Arabians sales horses, mares & foals and, of course, the incredible roster of Varian Arabian stallions… including the now famous Major Mac V, Mr Mereeke V, Lightning Strike V, Monticello V, Windy Bey V and Santino V.

Major Mac V is the most recent heir to the royal throne of Varian Arabian stallions – a group that spans five decades. There was no doubt in Sheila’s mind that he represented the perfect, grand culmination of six generations of breeding. Now with three foal crops on the ground, he is already an international superstar, embodying the best of his paternal ancestors, particularly Huckleberry Bey++. Major Mac V’s stage debut was most certainly in the short film, “The First of Many,” an Equus Film Festival award winner in 2016, based on his first ride in the hills of California with Lester Buckley at the request of Sheila one week before she passed away. The film luminously encapsulates the wonders of the horse/human connection in the rawest, most organic way that leaves no viewer unmoved or untouched.

Last but not least, the weekend will feature scrumptious meals all weekend, along with a a wine reception on Saturday evening.

The Varian Arabians Spring Fling will be a celebration of Sheila’s foundational principles, shared by a community of like-minded horsemen and women, wrapped up into one glorious, unforgettable weekend. We invite you to join us April 25–26 2020 to wholly experience the wondrous equine lifestyle that is The Varian Way.

power of the v

"V" Power was on full display in Tulsa at the 2019 U.S. Nationals in just about every division imaginable. We are proud of all the horses with that recognizable "V" on their hips, as well as the owners, breeders, and exhibitors who lovingly offered them this platform to shine.

We have compiled a list of V horses to the best of our ability. (If we have overlooked any horses, please let us know.) Please join us in congratulating these V horses, Major Mac progeny, and progeny of the great resident sire, Monticello V!

Monticello V Offspring

We are so proud of Monticello V’s numerous winning progeny in Tulsa. Check out these incredible Monticello V Stats in Tulsa:

- Four out of the six Monticello progeny shown in Tulsa were Top Ten or better. They racked up an impressive 4 Top Ten’s 1 Reserve Championship and 3 National Championships.

- Monticello progeny made up 20% of the top ten finalists in the most lucrative class of the show, the Arabian Horse World AWPA $100,000 Western Pl Futurity. (And one of them, Hendrixx WB, won it.) Monticello V was also the only sire to claim more than one progeny in the Top Ten

- Good odds: Out of only NINE progeny by Monticello V in 2015, TWO of them were named Top Ten of the 2019 AWPA $100,000 Western Pl Futurity… and one of them won it.

Amazingly, out of the top ten finalists, nine prominently included Afire Bey V in their pedigree… and three were directly sired by him!

"Mozes versatility, from English Trail, Western Dressage, Show Hack, classic Dressage, Under Saddle, Hunter Pleasure, and Western Pleasure, he does it all. Main ring and Sport Horse classes. I have made every effort to expose him to many disciplines to see what he is best at, and what "HE" enjoys the most, " states owner Debbie Canaday.  "I think if your horse enjoys what he is doing, it will show, and he will carry himself with his ears on. The judges will notice a happy horse, one who enjoys his job."

"I will say this about Mozes for these 2 National shows, he never took a bad step. Never embarrassed me. I asked, and he gave me the best of his abilities for his training and age. I am proud of him and my heart swells when I think of our accomplishments."
