2022 Heather Lomax Clinic

Welcome to the first of its kind in the US -- a mounted archery competition on the beach in California.  Canter riders only please.  We will be hosted for camping and boarding at the world renowned Varian Arabians.  

Courses and Schedule:

Please bring at least 2 doz arrows with your name clearly marked on them; at least 4 flu-flu arrows; and 10 - 16 blunt tips or blunt tip arrows for the gong targets.

Thursday Sept 22-  Mandatory Trot up and Practice Day (all riders and horses must participate to compete.)
Friday  Sept 23 - The Tower90, and half of the participants will ride the Hunt
Saturday Sept 24 - Raid233, and the other half of the participants will ride the Hunt

On the Beach Oceano Dunes Sate Park
Sunday Sept 25 - Beach course. Right on the beach with the waves in the background - shooting to the shore.
Please keep in mind we may need to adjust the course length, number of practice runs and number of scoring runs.  These adjustments may be needed depending on the conditions on the beach, which we will be running on the wet solid sand, no deep dry sand.  We have to work within the tide zone to accomplish this. General course description: 3-5 targets; 1-2 Qabac targets; and 3-4 gong targets (3m to 7m).  Course length 60-90meters.  Run with a par time comparable to the Tower.  Please bring flu flus, and blunt tip arrows only for this course.


We plan to have photographer and optional drone filming available for the beach day.  


Base Entry fee will be $325 for 4 day competition

Entry fee will include t-shirt, lunches on Friday and Saturday.  
Horse sharing/rental is not included with this base fee. Prices and arrangements must be made separately with the horse's owner.  

Overnight boarding, camping, and some housing accommodations will be at Varian Arabians.   Camping $30/night.   Boarding options available: shared paddocks to private corral will range from $15 to $18/night.  Varian staff will clean owner will feed.  Arrangements for housing can be arranged directly through Varian. Due to the high demand of this facility, we will not know how many corrals are available until we are closer to the actual competition dates.  So please have a back up plan such as portable corral.  Corral availability updates will be shared via emails collected from the event registration, and will go in order of registration requests. Camping and corrals will be arranged through this registration.


About the Venues:

Varian Arabians Check out this renowned facility we get to stay at and use Varian Arabians. We have use of a large sand lot to camp in, warm up horses, and set up National Ranking courses.  Close to down town Arroyo Grande restaurants, etc.

Oceano Dunes State Park - Grande Ave., Grover Beach, CA. Entrance. Parking for horse trailers will be available at the entrance to the beach, in a dirt parking lot.  From there participants can ride or walk their horses to the course on Sunday.  There is a restaurant in that parking lot.  We will have a water tank for the horses at the track/course; porta potties and wash stations for the riders.

Though she began riding horses before she learned to walk, Heather Lomax truly began to learn about horsemanship during her college years. Mentored by Reined Cow horse trainers early in her career before returning to the Tennessee Walking Horse breed she grew up with, Heather then gained over 20 years of experience specializing in training TWHs and other gaited breeds, and developing sound horse/rider relationships, including: showing and training TWHs, bridleless and at-liberty trick demonstrations, riding and horsemanship instruction for beginners through advanced riders, and presenting Bridleless Clinics.
